I had seen some YouTube videos on shooting glass and that provoked me to do this shoot.

Results

Lets start with some results.

Product Shoot - Glasses Product Schoot - Glasses Product Schoot - Glasses

Ingredients

  • Camera - Canon 450D (any SLR or a camera with a hot shoe would do)
  • Flash - Nikon SB-28 (or any similar flash)
  • Another flash - Nikon SB-28 with a DIY grid spot
  • Remote trigger - eBay poverty wizards
  • Backdrop -  white chart paper on a support
  • Black surroundings - I used a Lowepro bag and a collapsible softbox.
  • Stage - I used a black box
  • Tripods - Will discuss it later, but one is definitely needed.
  • Thin sheet of transparent plastic (in lieu of a sheet of glass)

 Setup shots

I first share photos of the individual components.

This shot shows two boxes I used for this shot. Both were picked up from my local superstores for free. They anyways are going to throw them and keep them for patrons to pck up items in.

The one on the left was used for the backdrop. The other one was used as the base. It helped me to place the main flash below the box.

This is the backdrop. The first box stands on itself (one reason for shoosing it) and then the sheet of white paper. In some shots, I held the top of the white paper with my hands, putting the camera on a 10 second shutter delay. That helped me getting the distribution of light even on the sheet.

Merged my Lightroom Catalogs

I have been doing one thing really wrong in Lightroom. I made it a habit to create a enw catalog for each calendar month. So I am currently adding my photos to the August2009 catalog. The good thing about this is that the Catalog does not grow out of propotion. After all, I don;t shoot everyday so the catalogs remain under 10 MB. The downside is that I cannot run a search across all my photos. This prompted me to merge all my catalogs. I learnt a few lessons in the way too.

So in the last week, all I have done (apart from working full time and fixing my website) is to collate my catalogs. I now have one catalog for all 2009 photos. I plan to export my portfolio photos out as a separate catalog so that they are separated from my other work (see gallery Other Endeavours in the Portfolio section).

I have to hit the bed now, but will write a post tomorrow touching on

  • how to merge catalogs
  • what to remember when merging catalogs.
